Overview:  Chrysoberyl is composed of Beryllium Aluminium Oxide. Chrysoberyl is a hard, tough, and durable gem. Chrysoberyl gems are yellow, and some are brown or green. There are two very rare varieties of chrysoberyl, the color changing alexandrite and the chatoyant cymophane.

Legend:  The name Chrysoberyl is of ancient origin, "beryl" being derived from the Greek word given to green gemstones, and "chryso" meaning golden. Chrysoberyl was very popular in Victorian and Edwardian times, when it was often inaccurately called Chrysolite.

Occurence:  Chrysolite occurs in Russia, Mogok, Pegu, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka and in the USA.

Color:  Chrysoberyl cats eye is a highly prized gemstone in the chrysoberyl family. The shortened term cats eye always refers to chrysoberyl cats eye. When cut in a cabochon or dome style, it displays fine, parallel lines of moving light rays that appear similar to the pupil of a cat. On Mohs scale of hardness, it is fairly hard at 8.5. Primary sources include Sri Lanka and Brazil as well as China, India, and Zimbabwe.
