Overview:  Indicolite derives its name from the Latin word for the indicum plant, famed for its blue colors. Indicolite or Blue Tourmaline is supposed to be the most colorful and rare variety of all gemstones. Indicolite is one of the rarer varieties of Elbaite. Elbaite is the most popular variety of Tourmaline that comes in many varied and beautiful colors. It is transparent to opaque and is found in metosomatically altered magnesian or dolomitic limestones in contact-metamorphic aureoles. A blue Tourmaline emanates a high degree of harmony and are reported to bring about openness and tolerance. Its typical color is a deeper almost neon blue than other blue gems such as Aquamarine and Blue Topaz.

Legend:  Indicolite was effectively re-discovered in Europe in 1703 when the Dutch imported some specimens that they had discovered in Sri Lanka. The Romans used Indicolite - particularly in carved broaches that often bore the images of animals and believed it to have strange occult powers.
