Overview: The name Pectolite comes from the Greek word 'Pectos' meaning 'well put together' in reference to the groups usually formed by the crystals of this mineral. Pectolite is quite a popular semi-precious stone. It occurs in white or colorless, gray, light yellow, light brown, light blue and light pink. Splinters of pectolite do not bend and are brittle. They are also sharp and can easily puncture the skin if not handled properly. Pectolite is composed of Sodium Calcium Silicate Hydroxide, sometimes with some manganese. It occurs in cavities of basalt in igneous environments, and is almost always associated with zeolites. Pectolite is popular among mineral collectors for its interesting radiating "blobs".

Legend: Pectolite was first discovered in 1828 in Mont Baldo and Mont Monzoni, Italy. An ocean blue variety of Pectolite was discovered in the Dominican Republic a few decades ago and was given the name Larimar, which is quite popular in the semi-precious stone market.
